New dance club Wav Room — or .wav room, as it’s stylized — has taken over the spot that once housed El Ojo on the St. Mary’s Strip.
The club is the latest venture by Empty Stomach Group’s John Michael Villanueva, Sophie Gonzalez and Chad Carey, who joined forces for the venture with Edward Silva, a local DJ who goes by LZRCAT. Wav Room will be a brick-and-mortar extension of Silva’s brainchild House Arrest, a dance-music DJ collective that entertains at clubs and parties throughout the city.
“This project is especially meaningful,” Silva’s Instagram post read. “Not just as an extension of @_house.arrest, but because of the love, thought, and passion poured into every detail.”
Empty Stomach Group is the parent company behind Midnight Swim, Little Death, Paper Tiger, Rumble, Vibras and new St. Mary’s Strip saloon and Texas barbecue joint High Horse.
The Empty Stomach Group has worked with Silva for more than a decade at its clubs and offered to partner with him to give his house music a home, according to Villanueva. In Silva’s Instagram post, he said he had a hand in designing the club’s interior, which will include a vinyl room and a DJ booth.

Gone is the iconic neon evil-eye sign that once advertised El Ojo on the building’s exterior at 3000 N. St. Mary’s. The emblem has been replaced by the logo Wav Room, which employs “music that loves you back” as its tagline.
Vinyl DJ sets will feature selections from various subgenres of house and electronic music, from techno to hard groove and beyond, according to Villanueva.
“We’re going to focus mostly on house, techno, drum and bass,” said Villanueva.
Drinks at the new club will be Japanese-inspired, incorporating flavors such as yuzu, macha and lychee, according to Villanueva. The bar also will sell bottles of the Korean liquor soju along with mocktails and a cherry blossom margarita.
Empty Stomach Group has yet to announce an official opening date, though Villanueva says the launch is imminent.
“It’s going to be in the next seven days,” he said. “We’re just going to make a post the day of. We’re still trying to work the kinks out.”
