Motivated by fond memories of her grandmother’s cooking in Chongqing, China, Ping Xia is bringing a taste of home to San Antonio with the opening of her first restaurant, Ping’s Sichuan Kitchen.

The Stone Oak-area restaurant’s grand opening took place Friday, May 16, and Xia wants the venture to serve both as a tribute to traditional fiery Sichuan flavors and a heartfelt nod to her roots and cherished family traditions.

“My mother passed away when I was very young,” Xia said, adding that she was therefore raised on her grandmother’s cooking. Those home-prepared meals inspired Xia’s dream of opening her own restaurant one day.

After moving to the U.S. in 2012, Xia relocated to San Antonio four years later, “because the weather reminded me of my hometown.”

Wanting to cook the same spicy recipes inspired by her youth and hometown, Xia hired a chef from Chongqing to stay true to her mission to keep the dishes as authentic as possible. Menu highlights at Ping’s range from Sichuan chicken dry pot to Hui Guo Rou (double-cooked pork belly) to shredded sweet garlic pork.

The restaurant, located at 2339 E. Evans Road, Suite 103, is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. seven days a week.

“I want my restaurant to be a place of community for family and friends — what better way to do that than over a nice meal?” Xia said.
