Some context: Back in 2016, an Austin Eater story talked about how breakfast tacos were born in the state capital. San Antonio was quick to shut this idea down and claimed our rightful ownership and expertise of breakfast tacos.
Next came a feud of who knew – and made – the delicious treats better. Dubbed a "taco war," the rivalry has calmed but been ever-present since then.
On Sunday, UT Austin shared an article about university researchers finding a way to "grow the perfect breakfast taco." In the article, the innovating discovery of the "self-assembling taco" was called a bigger deal than the internet.
But this is where things get funny.
This discovery has many asking: What does this mean for Austin? One could easily argue that Austin is the cultural epicenter of the breakfast taco movement, but there has been a long-standing rivalry with San Antonio. With this discovery, that debate may be ending.
While we know the article is all in good fun, we can't help but realize that Austin honestly still tries to claim victory.
Don't get us wrong – we're sure there's some good taquerias and Mexican restaurants that know what they're doing and can make a mean taco. But to think that they have us beat, or even come close? Psh.
