Plantyful Sweets — one of San Antonio’s rare 100% plant-based and allergy-friendly bakeries — has permanently closed its Main Strip storefront.
Gaby Borrego opened Plantyful Sweets in 2020 to satisfy her own quest for vegan-friendly desserts in San Antonio. Since then, the business at 1520 N. Main Ave. has served as a sanctuary for locals with dietary restrictions.
Although the closure occurred earlier this month, Borrego explained her decision to shut down the shop in a January Instagram post.
“Plantyful originally began as a solution to a problem, a fun lil project,” she wrote. “At age 23, I signed a lease after thinking it over for a good 10 minutes. Since then, I’ve learned how incredibly fulfilling this work is, but also how demanding it is.”
In updates on Plantyful’s Facebook and Instagram pages, Borrego revealed that she plans to keep the concept alive via “downloadable e-books and posting occasional recipes.” She added that wants to demonstrate “accessible ways to prepare these treats at home.”
The Current reached out to Borrego for additional comment but got no response by publication time.
In addition to its vegan goods, Plantyful prided itself as being an allergy-friendly space. As those with allergies know, bakeries often have just one or two “safe” treats to order, if any.
In an Instagram post from last fall, Borrego acknowledged her business’ focus on serving customers with special dietary needs.
“At Plantyful, you get to choose from many colors and flavors — all free from gluten, dairy, eggs, soy and peanuts,” she said. “Many common allergens don’t even make it into our kitchen to begin with, because we believe everyone deserves access to safe, intentional food.”
