In a Monday Instagram post, Mad Pecker said it’s closing after a week-long blowout also intended to celebrate 10 years in business. Last fall, owner Jason Gonzales told the Current that the brewpub, 6025 Tezel Road #122, was struggling to stay solvent as ale sales slipped and competition from chain restaurants bit into his food business.

“Come celebrate our 10th anniversary and going out of business party all this week,” Mad Pecker announced in its post. “Stop by for one final beer, bite to eat, and those chill MP vibes before we shut the doors for good on Monday night, March 31st.”

Mad Pecker joins Busted Sandal Brewing Co., Weathered Souls Brewing Co., Man Overboard Brewing Co. and other local craft beer operations that have shut down amid rising business costs and a national decline in beer sales. The city’s largest indie brewer Alamo Beer Co. is in the midst of Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Mad Pecker produces roughly a dozen beers in-house and also cooks up pizzas, sandwiches and burgers in a full kitchen. The venture launched during 2015’s craft-brewery boom, but owner Gonzales told the Current late last year that sales never recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Coming out of COVID, we haven’t been able to generate the revenue,” he said. “There’s a lack of people coming through the door.”
