Although Spurs fans watched Duncan dominate on the basketball court for 19 seasons and five NBA championships, off the court he remained an enigma to many — quiet, reserved and content to let his game speak for itself.
Fans will get a closer look at Duncan’s life in the upcoming documentary The Boy from St. Croix. The film will have its world premiere at the 32nd Annual Austin Film Festival, Oct. 23-30.
Directed by Duncan’s older brother, Scott, The Boy from St. Croix promises to offer fans a more complete look at the player’s life off the court, including his relationship with the Caribbean locale where he grew up.
“After decades keeping the world at arm’s length, Tim Duncan reveals himself in this intimate portrait of a singularly competitive force who found basketball as an outlet for his drive, becoming one of the world’s most famous athletes even as he never lost his connection to his island home,” the movie’s official synopsis reads.
Duncan was born and raised in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and wanted to follow in his older sister’s footsteps and become an Olympic swimmer. However, his plans were diverted when a hurricane destroyed the island’s only Olympic-sized swimming pool.

In May 1997, five months before he even stepped on the court as a Spurs rookie, Duncan was awarded the Virgin Islands Medal of Honor.
“[Duncan] is the favorite son,” U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said in 2021. “He’s an international icon, and we’ve never had that. Our people really appreciate that he comes over from the Virgin Islands and he wears that proudly.”
