D.R.I. (that’s Dirty Rotten Imbeciles to those still hung up on formality) was one of the key bands during the Reagan era to mate hardcore tempos with metallic kerrang and birth an ugly-ass baby called thrash. As testament to the band’s ferocity, its debut LP packed in 22 blasts of hyper-speed, hyper-pissed suburban fury, only a handful clocking in longer than a minute.
While D.R.I. moved in a more metal direction over time (sometimes with tepid results), it never fully throttled back the speed and anger that inspired a legion of admirers — Slayer among them. If you’re up to reliving the formative years of thrash, good thing original singer Kurt Brecht and guitarist Spike Cassidy are still around to boot you in the noggin.
