Texas neo-soul performer Leon Bridges is playing a nearly sold-out Majestic Theatre this Thursday with Hermanos Gutiérrez — a duo of brothers who deliver chill, minimalist grooves with an Ecuadorian flavor — opening the show.
Fort Worth-raised Bridges skyrocketed to fame early in his career, signing to Columbia Records before dropping his 2015 debut studio album, Coming Home. The release’s title track became one of the most viral songs on Spotify the month it was released.
At the time, Bridges was working as a dishwasher and busking on the streets of Cowtown. Within two years, his life changed dramatically, culminating in a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album, a widely viewed Saturday Night Live performance and even entertaining President Barack Obama at the White House.
Bridges also collaborated with Houston-based and globally inspired instrumental group Khruangbin on the single “Texas Sun,” a love letter to the Lone Star State and his hometown.
Bridges has been compared to ’60s soul greats such as Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, and he even dresses the part by sporting vintage clothing for live performances.
With the buzz building around all-instrumental opener Hermanos Gutiérrez, Thursday’s concert almost feels like a double-header. The brothers grew up in Switzerland but frequently visited family in Ecuador, which informed their distinctive sound, drawn in part from Latin American music of the ’50s through the ’70s.
In addition to the hauntingly beautiful sparseness of their guitar-based music, the brothers have gained attention for their use striking imagery in online videos that have pulled in millions of views.
The duo also racked up 3.2 million views for its 2023 Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music. One of the songs performed was “Tres Hermanos,” a track originally recorded with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Get ready to be entertained by two inimitable acts, San Antonio.
