Leaving my own show on the East Side, I made my way to Buzzmill Coffee to wait for my boyfriend to scoop me up to head back to his place. I was sipping on a chai latte outside on the patio and listening to this DJ spinning records when I noticed a familiar looking dude sifting through the vinyl crates behind him.
That dude was Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine.
I turned to a patron at a nearby table and asked, “Dude, is that fucking Tom Morello?” He said, “Yeah, that’s definitely Tom Morello.”
Unconvinced and curious, I went up to the familiar looking dude and said, “Hey, are you Tom Morello?” He said “yes.” I shook his hand and then left him alone, 'cause I sensed a fanboy fit about to erupt and he sort of had a vibe that said, "I just want to hang with my friends, pal."
I texted a few people that would care that I met one of the sickest guitarists of all-time and remembered that the night before, the Rage member was at a Testify show – A Rage Against the Machine tribute band based out of Houston.
How insane would that be to see a member of the band you’re paying tribute to in the audience?
While I realize this was sort of a roundabout way to get to this announcement, and while neither Morello nor any of the members of Rage Against the Machine or Prophets of Rage are headed to San Antonio anytime soon (sorry), Testify is coming to San Antonio on Saturday, January 19, for a show at Fitzgerald's.
And, hey, ya never know, maybe Tom will be there.
With Devilpee (a System of a Down tribute), $8, 9pm, Fitzgerald's Bar & Live Music Venue, 437 McCarty Suite 101, fitzrockssa.com.
