Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Gipsy Kings

gipsykingsgipsy_kings_

At a time when gypsy culture is questionably poached by reality shows (most notably TLC’s My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding), the Gipsy Kings possess an authentic mystique that predates the 1987 release of their global hit “Bamboleo.” An outgrowth of the late flamenco legend José Reyes’ France-based family band Los Reyes, Gipsy Kings — brothers Nicolas, André, Paul, Canut, and Patchai Reyes plus cousins Tonino, Jacques “Paco,” and Maurice “Diego” Baliardo (sons of Manitas de Plata, “The Picasso of the Flamenco Guitar”) — put an easy-drinking spin on modern “rumba catelana.” With a gravelly voice the Los Angeles Times once described as “breathtakingly emotive,” Nicolas leads the band’s unmistakable originals and brave reinventions of untouchable classics like “Volare,” “Hotel California,” and “My Way.” $45-$65, 8pm, The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, (210) 226-3333, majesticempire.com.
