Architect Arthur J. Herrmann’s best known San Antonio creation is the Hotel Havana, the stylish downtown boutique hotel that started life in 1914 as a Mediterranean Revival-style apartment building.

But Herrmann also designed homes, including this 1907 Monte Vista property, originally owned by businessman C.W. Buhler. And much like the Hotel Havana, the two-story residence, recently listed for $975,000, is a stunning architectural creation.

A curving, Art-Deco style staircase, plentiful stained glass and built-in architectural woodwork grace the foyer, while hand-painted murals, a coffered ceiling and scrolling ornamental woodwork adorn the formal dining room.

The house’s seller bought it in 2021 as a rental property and upgraded it by adding central air conditioning, according to the listing agent. Thankfully, the out-of-town investor didn’t try to modernize any of its other grandiose turn-of-the-century features.

This home is listed by Sarah Buhidar with Compass RE Texas LLC.
