Maria Bamford turns her mental chaos into comedy, and now, the stand-up, actress and author is bringing that absurdity and anguish to San Antonio.

Bamford will perform this Thursday at Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club.

In Bamford’s streaming stand-up specials, she shows great control of her voice, whether it is her tone, flow or inflection. Her sets are full of impressions, and her effortless-seeming vocal control flawlessly emphasizes her jokes.

It’s little surprise that Bamford’s voice plays such a key role in her comedic work. As an actress, she’s lent it to roles in TV shows including Adventure Time, Bojack Horseman, American Dad and Bob’s Burgers, to name a few.

During her routines, Bamford relies heavily on storytelling, using her voice to swap between herself and other characters. Mental health issues also play heavily into her work as she wrings laughs from her anxious ramblings and chaotic mind.

Critics have praised Bamford for her frank discussion of mental health, touching on family dysfunction, depression and more. For her advocacy, she’s received The OCD Foundation’s Illumination Award.

$31.40-$49.94, 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m., Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, 618 NW Loop 410, (210) 541-8805, improvtx.com.
