San Antonio residents pay about as much attention to fireworks bans as TK.
Need more proof? A clip of people launching fireworks mortars from the back of a pickup truck rolling down the South Side’s prime cruising spot is making the rounds on social media this week.
The video — which has been shared on X, Instagram and Facebook — is racking up clicks even as Bexar County officials reported that unauthorized fireworks displays were responsible for $100,000 in property damage this holiday season.
In the 10-second clip, two men are seen launching explosive mortar rounds from the bed of a white GMC pickup while it moves through the intersection of Logwood Avenue and Southwest Military. Reggaeton music blasts in the background.
The video posted by Instagram account @Sanantoniofoos has garnered nearly 50,000 likes and more than 500 comments as of press time.
“These guys were out in full force,” Instagram user @fancy_tako_lady commented. “Fireworks, kick-ass cars, awesome food, and no drama. Everyone was there for a good time. Proud of you, San Antonio.”
Of course, those with pets, PTSD and dry, flammable backyards may not be using the word “proud” to describe the pyrotechnics.
Even so, an array of other videos of showcasing the extreme nature of SA’s amateur fireworks displays have proliferated on social media — as per usual.
In its public accounting of fireworks-related damage released Thursday, Bexar County attributed the $100,000 in recent property damage to explosives that ignited a total of 32 fires between Dec. 28 and Jan. 1. Those included at least 12 brush fires, three structure fires and two vehicle fires.
Miraculously, no serious related fireworks-related injuries were reported during that time period.
