When Swedish hotshots Karin Jimfelt-Ghatan (a fashion designer) and Per Holknekt (a former skateboarding and pinball champion) teamed up a few years ago to create Odd Molly, the line was originally sold in the back of Stockholm cafés. Now their funky, feminine, Old World-inspired fashions are found in 27 countries, department stores as prestigious as Paris’s Galeries Lafeyette, and the most modern boutiques on the planet, including our very own Galeana on Main street.
Easy dresses and tops in cheerful cotton prints, trimmed with vintage-looking lace and ethnic embroidery, and dotted with silver charms and tiny bows, exemplify Odd Molly this spring. An ankle-length prairie dress in blue, red, and turquoise fabrics is boho chic and (in Texas) seasonless. Pair with flip-flops now, gritty brown leather boots in fall. A shrunken turquoise cardigan embroidered in roses and butterflies has ’50s charm. A standout in the collection is a bronze and white surplice top dress, trimmed in vibrant purple and white, with an exposed silk and lace slip hem.
In addition to loving the consistent use of bright color and lightweight, year-round fabric, boutique owner Galeana Younger says, “In a very charming way, the Odd Molly brand is sort of a conundrum. It’s everyday, but not basic. It’s somewhat accidental, but purposefully deliberate. It feels familiar, yet still uncommon. Perhaps that’s why there is so much attraction and appeal to the line.”
