Soon, horror fanatics in San Antonio won’t have to wait until spooky season to get their thrills.

San Antonio’s first year-round haunted attraction, the Scream Experiment, is coming to Alamo Plaza in March, its owner and developer said Thursday. The Scream Experiment will join an expanding list of horror experiences in tourism-focused cities such as Las Vegas and Orlando as Texas’ only year-round haunted house.

Davis Phillips, CEO of Phillips Entertainment, which owns the Scream Experiment, described it as an experience only found in San Antonio. His SA-based company also operates the nearby Buckhorn Saloon and ran plaza attractions such as Ripley’s Haunted and Adventure and Tomb Raider 3-D, which closed three years ago to make way for the Alamo museum.

“Another way I like to describe it is that this will be the [Disney World] of haunted houses,” Phillips told the Current via email.

Open every day of the year, The Scream Experiment will allow guests to explore the fictional Restful Sleep Hotel’s haunted corridors and 13 unique guest rooms, each with its own haunted history, according to Phillips. The 15-to-20 minute walkthrough will include psychological scares and jumpscares, relying on moments of both suspense and fright.

“The design of [the Scream Experiment] is calculated to catch guests off guard at every turn, to assault their ears with otherworldly sounds and to create an atmosphere of horrific chaos sure to haunt the midnights of guests long after they have exited the hotel,” Phillips said.

The attraction reduces the use of gore and focuses on psychological fear to appeal to guests of all ages, according to Phillips. Though he didn’t disclose how many scares are in each walkthrough, he said it was “more than you expect.”

The Restful Sleep Hotel will be a $4 million experience that includes live actors, special effects, CGI and animatronics, Phillips told the Current. Designers will surprise and misdirect guests as they choose between various pathways, interact with actors and engage with the “Scream-O-Meter” to find their way out.

The attraction’s themes will change throughout the year, Phillips also said. The entertainment company is planning on special events, new themes and enhancements for the future.

Depending on the season, the price of the tickets will run roughly $25-$35 per person, according to Phillips. Though The Scream Experiment is designed for all ages, Phillips encouraged parents of children under 10 years old to use their own discretion.
