A new Democratic National Committee add campaign on Thursday blasted U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, over his repeated votes against extending enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits.

The digital ads, which are running on the Express-News’ and Current’s sites, accuse the four-term incumbent and fellow Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of voting to send health care costs skyrocketing for more than 3 million Texans.

The Senate is scheduled to vote Thursday on a Democrat-backed bill to extend expiring ACA tax credits for three years.

The DNC is running the ads in San Antonio, where Cornyn grew up and began his political career. Committee officials said they’re also buying additional digital ads to target persuadable voters statewide, including rural areas, where residents are expected to face some of the most serious hardships if the ACA credits evaporate.

The ads also come as Cornyn faces a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton ahead of the 2026 midterms, which are expected to be punishing for the GOP. Texas Rep. James Talarico and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, both considered Democratic rising stars, are vying to face Cornyn in the general.

“Today’s Senate vote to extend the ACA tax credits could be the difference between life and death for thousands of Texans,” DNC Chair Ken Martin said in an emailed statement. “Over 3 million Texans will see their health care premiums skyrocket next year if John Cornyn does not stand with working families and vote to extend these lifesaving credits.”

Martin cautioned that families already struggling to afford basic necessities such as food and rent would be forced to shell out hundreds more on their health care coverage or go without.

“We are the wealthiest nation on earth — nobody should go without health care in the United States,” Martin said. “Democrats will continue fighting to stop these price hikes and we urge all Republicans to join us.”
