District 8 Councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzalez showed difficulty following a simple instruction during the field sobriety test that proceeded her arrest last week on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to a blood draw warrant cited by MySA.
In the warrant, the San Antonio police officer who pulled over Gonzalez said the first-term councilwoman was “failing to maintain a lane of travel” while she drove westbound on I-10 near Fresno Street at around 11 p.m. last Thursday, the online news outlet reports.
During Gonzalez’s subsequent field sobriety test, the officer instructed her to take nine steps forward, MySA reports, citing the blood draw warrant. Instead, the councilwoman reportedly took 22, and the officer had to stop her from taking more.
The initial police report from Gonzalez’s arrest also accused her of staggering and swaying during interactions with the officer, according to a prior MySA report.
Authorities issued a blood draw warrant after Gonzalez refused a breathalyzer test.
Gonzalez, who served as Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s chief of staff before her council run, this week retained attorney David Christian to represent her in the case. Christian also represented District 10 Councilman Marc Whyte and his predecessor, Clayton Perry, in their DWI cases.
Gonzalez’s next court appearance is slated for Aug. 25.
