Early voting in San Antonio’s first wide-open mayoral election since 2009 gets underway Tuesday with more than 40 early voting centers operating across Bexar County.

The early voting period will close Tuesday, April 29 before polls reopen from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. for the Saturday, May 3, election. The Bexar County Elections department maintains an online list of early polling sites.

Early voting hours will vary by day:

  • Tuesday, April 22-Friday, April 25: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 26: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 27: Noon -6 p.m.
  • Monday, April 28-Tuesday, April 29: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

A total of 27 candidates, including four current City Council members, are vying to replace termed-out Mayor Ron Nirenberg in the election.

Former U.S. Air Force Under Secretary Gina Ortiz Jones is leading the race, with 12.8% of likely voters saying they plan to vote for her, according to a poll released last week by the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Center for Public Opinion and Research. District 9 City Councilman John Courage came in second place with 7.1%, while 6.6% of those surveyed said they plan to vote for tech entrepreneur and political newcomer Beto Altamirano.

Even so, the race remains wide open, with more than 45% of respondents in the survey saying they’re either undecided or are “not familiar with” any of the candidates on the ballot.

In the likely situation that no single candidate secures more than 50% of the vote on election day, the two contenders who receive the most will face each other in a June 7 runoff.
