San Antonio-born director Robert Rodriguez was spotted by a fan while dining at  north-of-downtown Tex-Mex staple Rolando’s Super Tacos over the weekend.

SA resident Ruben Rojas posted about his encounter with the From Dusk Till Dawn, Machete and Spy Kids director in San Antonio Restaurants, a Facebook group for local foodies.

Rojas noted that the acclaimed director was surrounded by signed posters of himself on the restaurant’s walls. After Rojas approached Rodriguez, the filmmaker told him Rolando’s is among his “top two spots in San Antonio.”

Rodriguez was born in San Antonio in 1968 and attended St. Anthony High School. He made his directorial debut with the self-financed 1992 action film El Mariachi.

The micro-budgeted El Mariachi became the first movie in the commercially successful Mexico Trilogy, which also included Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The later installments featured larger budgets and big-name stars including Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

The encounter leaves one big question, though: what’s the other San Antonio taqueria in Rodriguez’s top two?
