Federal regulators are demanding that U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas explain why his reelection campaign took nearly $19,000 in illegal campaign donations during the third quarter of 2023 without returning them.

The Federal Election Commission, which regulates campaign finance, sent a Jan. 20 letter giving the campaign treasurer for Crenshaw, a Republican who represents the Houston area, until Feb. 24 to explain the contributions.

Under federal law, political campaigns aren’t punished if someone sends a contribution that violates the rules, however, they are expected to any illegal contributions within 60 days. In their letter, FEC officials said it appeared Crenshaw’s campaign had failed to do so.

The Dan Crenshaw for Congress campaign was unavailable Tuesday for immediate comment.

Failure to adequately respond [to the letter] by the response date noted above could result in an audit or enforcement action,” according to the FEC.
The FEC said it may pursue further legal action against the campaign but noted “your prompt action to refund the excessive amount will be taken into consideration.” The letter identifies five donors to Crenshaw’s campaign who violated federal laws limiting individuals’ total contributions to $3,300 per election cycle. It also identifies a sixth donor who violated the election code by making a contribution from a foreign address.
