We promised an update if more details emerged about the abrupt cancelation of Fiesta San Antonio staple Alamo Heights Night.

Well, here it is: the gathering is on the rocks because of funding issues, according to its organizer, the Alamo Heights Rotary Club.

“The event had become one that barely breaks even, which was limiting the ability of the club to provide charitable contributions to various nonprofits in the community,” Alamo Heights Rotary President Rick Thorp informed KSAT in a written statement.

Thorp didn’t tell the TV station when or if the gathering would resume at a later date.

Word of the cancelation spread quickly this week after the Rotary Club shared an online post saying Alamo Heights night was “paused” and wouldn’t take place on April 17 in its usual spot at the University of the Incarnate Word.

The event is the club’s biggest annual fundraiser, reportedly pulling in nearly $2.5 million since its 1987 inception.

Thorp told KSAT he regrets any shock and confusion that resulted from the surprise announcement. Alamo Heights Rotary let the Fiesta Commission know about the event’s cancellation months ago but somehow the word never got out, he added.
