The congressional staffer for U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales who died in a fiery death outside her Uvalde home last month doused herself in gasoline before she was “ignited into flames,” according to the Express-News

Gonzales’ regional district director, Regina Ann “Regi” Santos-Aviles, 35, was airlifted to San Antonio’s Brooke Army Medical Center on Sept. 13 after she caught fire in the backyard of her home. She died of her injuries the following day.

The Uvalde police and the Texas Rangers are still investigating the incident. What’s more, the Bexar County Medical Examiner still hasn’t ruled on a cause of death.

However, the Express-News and the Uvalde Leader-News reported Tuesday that Uvalde police told firefighters that Santos-Aviles had “doused herself in gasoline” before she ignited.

Uvalde Police Chief Homer E. Delgado last week also told members of the press that preliminary surveillance footage from Santos-Aviles’ home showed that she was alone in her backyard when the fire started.

“At this stage of the investigation, we do not have any information to suggest that anyone else was involved,” Delgado said.
