A Victorian home for sale in the Tobin Hill neighborhood has undergone a $15,000 price cut since it was first listed last October.

Dubbed the “F.M. Hagner House” on a historic plaque out front, the two-story residence is now listed at $848,000, down from an $863,000 asking price when the Current wrote about it in the fall.

According to city records, the property was built in 1907. However, the present owners have compelling proof that Hagner built the house as early as 1895.

The structure is full of ornate details original to its turn-of-the-century construction, including coffered ceilings, elegant raised-panel wainscoting and pocket doors. The floors are also original hardwood, with some planks up to 27 feet long.

The bay window even has streaks in it, indicating gravity had dragged down grains of sand that were once heated to form the glass. A clawfoot bathtub in an upstairs bathroom is also original to the house, sitting regally on golden-hued lion’s paws.

The most bizarre detail of its original construction, however, is the living room’s dual purpose as a funeral parlor. This is indicated by an unusual nook — just big enough for a casket — in the open area.

People kept corpses in the home for extended viewings during the Victorian era, which is notorious for its morbidity and comfortable association with death. Part of this lengthy viewing period at home was pragmatic, however, as it took visiting relatives a great deal of time to travel by carriage and pay their respects.

As a result, we’re are taking bets whether this house is haunted.

This home is listed by Libby Ross with Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper Realtors.
