Former San Antonio mayor Julián Castro earlier this week was denied entrance to an immigration detention facility while trying to give toys and cards to children being held inside.
On Monday evening, Castro and his team behind We Belong Together, which highlights unjust immigration laws, got as far as the door of the McAllen facility detaining more than 1,000 immigrants in cages.
In the video you can hear someone tell Castro via intercom that someone would meet them at the door, but no one ever came. Castro ended up leaving the toys and cards at the door.
Castro said that the children separated from their parents are feeling alone and are traumatized. He had hoped they would be able to find comfort in knowing that people want them to be reunited with their families.
Castro's attempted visit comes two weeks after
Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon attempted to visit a Brownsville facility operating out of a former Walmart. Officials there asked Merkley to leave the property.
