With the holidays drawing neat, the San Antonio Food Bank has received two sizable donations to help with its mission of keeping food-insecure families fed.

First, Alamo City philanthropist Harvey Najim has donated $500,000 to the Food Bank that will match dollar-for-dollar all donations the organization receives this month.

Second, Bank of America pledged $50,000 to the nonprofit as part of the bank’s $5 million commitment to combat hunger nationwide.

Najim’s donation was motivated by the federal shutdown, which is expected to have a lasting impact on government workers and contractors along with SNAP recipients, according to Food Bank officials. Najim hopes to challenge other San Antonians to keep pantries stocked during the holiday season.

“Harvey Najim is a great champion for our community, and his support for families this Thanksgiving season is unprecedented,” San Antonio Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper said in a statement.

For its part, Bank of America’s $5 million hunger-fighting contribution is expected to benefit 100 nonprofits nationwide. The immediate donation comes in addition to $250 million the corporation has pledged to donate over the next five years to combatting hunger.

“Our ongoing commitment to the needs of the local communities where we work and live is foundational to who we are at Bank of America,” Bank of America Chief People Officer Sheri Bronstein said in a statement. “We work closely with food banks, food pantries, and other basic needs-focused organizations every day, and this new commitment builds on decades of giving, volunteering, and partnership.”
