Longtime San Antonio-area car dealers Richard Dean Hovey and Richard Dean Hovey Jr. have been arrested on accusations that they set up an elaborate system to bilk customers out of more than $300,000, the Boerne Star reports.
The father and son, ages 81 and 58, run Boerne-based Hovey Motorcars, a dealership that specializes in used luxury vehicles and classic cars. The 27-year-old business relocated from San Antonio to the northern bedroom community in 1998.
The Hoveys face charges of theft over $300,000 and misapplication of financial property between $30,000-$150,000, according to the Boerne Star. The theft charge is a first-degree felony, while the misapplication accusation is a third-degree felony.
The bond for each of the two men is set at $350,000, the Star reports.
Boerne Police told the newspaper they made the arrests after a yearlong investigation prompted but multiple customer complaints. Authorities allege the father and son operated a scheme by which they profited from victims’ vehicles without seeking their permission to use them in that way.
“The Boerne Police Department would like to acknowledge the collaborative efforts of detectives and community members whose contributions were critical in moving this case forward,” Boerne police said in a statement supplied to the Star. “The department continues to prioritize justice and accountability in protecting the citizens of Boerne and Kendall County.”
