Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, best known for starring as Ritchie Valens in
La Bamba, has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in Portland, Texas.
On Wednesday, Phillips appeared at the San Patricio County Courthouse with his father and
entered a plea deal. The 56-year-old actor was given two years probation and must not drink for two years, according to the
Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
Back on November 3, Phillips was arrested after local police officers suspected he was driving while intoxicated. Portland Police Chief Mark Cory told reporters that an officer was in the middle of another traffic stop when Phillips, a native to the area, approached him and
asked for directions. The officer gave him a few sobriety tests, which Phillips failed since his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.
As part of the plea deal, Phillips must use a portable device that monitors alcohol, take part in a DWI education program, not go to bars and report for probation at the courthouse in-person for four months.
