Over the weekend, San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones called for the cancelation of a July 4 Alamodome concert by controversial rapper Ye, formerly Kanye West.

In a Saturday tweet, Jones said she supported scrapping the performance.

“Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome — not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday,” she added.

Standing up to antisemitism, Jones said, was “exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect union.”

Ye is stopping at the Alamodome, with a capacity of more than 70,000, as part of a tour promoting his new album Bully.

Over the years, West has fielded criticism for antisemitic provocations, including releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and selling merchandise featuring swastikas.

“I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE,” he wrote in a 2022 social media post.

The rapper apologized for his actions in 2023, before rescinding in 2025. In January, he took out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal, expressing regret yet again for his behavior and attributing it to untreated bipolar disorder.

Jones isn’t the only official having second thoughts about welcoming the controversial rapper as he attempts a world tour.

Last month, Italian officials canceled one of Ye’s July concert dates after local Jewish leaders voiced fears about security. In April, the British government, citing the artist’s antisemitic remarks, barred him from entering the country to play several dates.

That same month, officials in Poland and Sweden canceled shows scheduled for June. The rapper also called off a performance in France, after officials said they were considering a ban.

Ye is also scheduled to perform June 26 and 29 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Rick Scott, the state’s senior Republican senator, has urged local officials to reconsider.

Despite backlash following Ye around the world, he did perform to nearly 40,000 fans in the Netherlands this month and played two sold out shows in Los Angeles in April, according to the New York Times.

Ye also has concerts scheduled this summer in Spain, Portugal, Albania and Chicago.
