City Council on Thursday unanimously approved creation of the San Pedro Creek Development Authority (SPCDA), an entity that will oversee development of a new $160 million minor league baseball stadium for the Double-A San Antonio Missions.

The city, Bexar County and local real-estate developer Weston Urban will jointly control the SPCDA, and its board will include Mayor Ron Nirenberg, City Manager Erik Walsh and city Chief Financial Officer Ben Gorzell. Among other things, the entity will oversee the issuance of bond financing to finance the park’s construction.

Also on Thursday, council approved using $285,000 in taxpayer money to cover costs for repairing the deteriorating Nelson Wolff Stadium, where the San Antonio Missions’ currently play.

The funds will cover completed work that enlarged the stadium’s visitor locker room, expanded team training areas and repaired dugouts, among other renovations. The city was on the hook for 70% of those costs due to a contract extension and improvement deal signed in 2021.

The MLB said the improvements were necessary if San Antonio wants to keep a minor league baseball team — a threat that pushed city and county officials to get a new stadium deal in place last year.

The new stadium is expected to open in time for the 2028 season.
