A new viral app is helping people keep track of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, including those taking place in San Antonio.
Launched in April, ICEBlock helps individuals stay informed about ICE movements and is designed to serve as an early warning system for users when agents with the federal deportation force are nearby, according to app creator Joshua Aaron, who spoke with CNN this week.
Users can add a pin to a map indicating where ICE was spotted, along with a description of what the agents are wearing and the type of action they’re carrying out. The app has more than 20,000 users, Aaron told CNN.
“As I often say, if you ever wondered what you would’ve done if you lived in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power, wonder no more because you’re doing it right now,” Aaron told Newsweek during an interview. “Developing ICEBlock was my way of joining the fight and giving people a chance to help protect themselves and their communities.”
Even so, Aaron reiterated to both Newsweek and CNN that his app is designed to be an early warning system, not a means to interfere with ICE agents or cause them harm.
To that end, when users log a sighting, the app provides the following message: “The use of this app is for information and notification purposes only. It is not to be used for the purposes of inciting violence or interfering with law enforcement.”
Aaron told CNN that the app doesn’t collect users’ data, and to ensure user safety, all posts are anonymous.
The app is free to download, but is available only for iOS users.
Word of ICEBlock’s popularity comes after the moderators of the r/sanantonio reddit page faced backlash this week for censoring posts about ICE activities around the Alamo City.
