A French court slapped Nike with a $75,000 fine for using a famous sculpture of Winston Churchill for promotion in violation of the artist’s rights.
The San Antonio Express-News reported that the artist — Jean Cardot — sued Nike and the promotional company behind the stunt.
Footwear giant Nike has been fined €67,500, the equivalent of roughly $75,000, for putting an oversized Tony Parker France national team jersey on a statue of Winston Churchill to commemorate Les Bleus’ qualifications for the 2011 European Championships.
The statue is in front of the Petit Palais. The artist is also known for sculptures of General Charles de Gaulle and Thomas Jefferson.
