No Deal Between The Hays Street Restoration Group And San Antonio

The City of San Antonio and the Hays Street Bridge Restoration Group just don't see eye to eye.

In February, the entities were ordered to try and negotiate a settlement over land at 803 E. Cherry that was sold to Alamo Beer Co. in December, where California transplant Eugene Simor built a brewery that's gaining in popularity after it opened earlier this year.

Monday was San Antonio and the restoration group's deadline to settle, which has come and gone with no deal, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

One of the disagreements is over viewshed protection — or making sure the bridge is not hidden by development, according to the newspaper.

Last July, a jury found that the city breached its 2002 contract with the Hays Street Bridge Restoration Group, which raised money to save the bridge from a proposed demolition in 1994 to make way for a hike-and-bike trail.

The restoration group contends the property couldn't be sold for private development and the city has argued that the lot was donated without specific use requirements.

Alamo Beer isn't built on the disputed land, which the city sold to Simor in December after both a judge and jury sided with the restoration group.
