Port San Antonio’s board of directors voted Tuesday afternoon to spend $7.5 million to finalize architectural plans, a budget and timeline for a wing-shaped, 12-story office tower that will be a crown jewel for the former Kelly Air Force base.

Port officials want to complete the $275 million structure by 2028, adding an abundance of high-end office space for the industrial park. Its leadership sees the 300,000-square-foot building, dubbed Innovation Tower, as a major step toward attracting more advanced-technology businesses.

In addition to top-end office space — a rarity in Southwest San Antonio — the new tower will include amenities such as a health and wellness center, a sauna and a large conference room, according to details shared by port officials.

Port San Antonio has built nearly 750,000 square-feet of new facilities since 2017, adding to an array of hangars, offices and production sites left over from its former life as an Air Force maintenance depot. Roughly 80 public- and private-sector tenants at the site employ a total of 18,000 people.

As the industrial site looks to attract more investment from industries such as aerospace, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing, it’s shared plans for additional development. A large childcare facility, additional high-security facilities for cybersecurity operations and a “vertiport” for air taxis and other vertical take-off and landing vehicles are all in the planning stage.
