The results are in.

Primary runoff election totals yielded a win for Bexar County Commissioner Precinct 4 Democratic candidate and Eastside organizer Tommy Calvert, who upset SAISD board of trustee member and former council woman Debra Guerrero with a nearly 30 percent lead. During a recent debate among runoff candidates, Calvert pledged to invest in minority and women-owned local businesses and help revitalize the Eastside.
On the Republican side, two mayors went head-to-head in the runoff, with Timothy Wilson of Kirby beating out Windcrest mayor Alan Baxter (52 percent to 48 percent). It appears Baxter’s criticisms of Wilson as a faux-Republican did little to stave off GOP voters from picking his opponent at the polls. Calvert and Wilson will now duel it out for a spot on the court, vacated by long-time Commissioner Tommy Adkisson.
Statewide races proved victorious for Tea Party-aligned candidates, most notably state Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston), who pummeled three-term incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor of Texas with a 65-35 margin. A controversial conservative radio talk show host, Patrick holds ardent anti-immigration views (illustrated during the recent Univision debate on immigration policy with San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro), promotes the teaching of Creationism in public schools, has authored abortion restrictive legislation and opposes abortion, even in cases of rape or incest.
Patrick now faces SA state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte— a pro-choice, immigration reform advocate—in what amounts to in many ways, a race between polar opposites.
And it looks like the Democratic Party doesn’t have to hang its head in shame, after all. Rebuked by her own party, U.S. Senate Dem candidate and anti-Obama advocate Kesha Rogers lost to Dallas dentist David Alameel by roughly 40 percent of the vote. Alameel now faces incumbent Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn in a long-shot bid.
All runoff winners will go head-to-head with their challengers in the general election this November.
