Two high school students are in custody this week over allegations they conspired to carry out a mass shooting on a San Antonio-area campus.
The arrests come days after a person opened fire at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, killing two children and injured 17 others.
The Schertz Police Department arrested the two juveniles Thursday after school administrators contacted Clemens High School’s resource officer about reports of two students threatening to carry out a mass shooting on the grounds, the department said in a Facebook post.
During an investigation, Schertz police discovered that one of the students said he desired to “shoot up the school” but lacked access to weapons, according to the department’s statement. The second juvenile reportedly said he could provide the necessary equipment.
A student who claimed to have overheard the conversation then alerted school officials. Police said they verified the allegations via video evidence.
Both students are being held at Guadalupe County Juvenile Detention Center and are charged with making terroristic threats, a third-degree felony.
“We want to express our gratitude to the student who came forward to report the threats, and we acknowledge the school administration for their collaborative efforts during this investigation,” the Schertz Police Department wrote in its social media post.
