The San Antonio Current on Friday received four nominations in the Association of Alternative Newsmedia’s annual AAN Awards.

Those nominations include:

Right-Wing Extremism Coverage: Reporting on the “Take Back Our Border” convoy by Staff Writer Michael Karlis
Long-Form News Story: “‘Fundamental breakdown’: How San Antonio-based USAA landed in regulators’ hot seat” by Editor-in-Chief Sanford Nowlin and American Banker reporter Polo Rocha
Food Writing: Nina Rangel
Ad Marketing Campaign (Created In-House): Design and marketing materials for Whiskey Business

The Current’s sister publications in the Chava Communications family also earned finalist slots in the AAN Awards. Creative Loafing Tampa and Orlando Weekly received two nominations each.

The 2025 AAN Awards finalists were chosen from 750 submissions. Winners will be announced July 11, 2025, during the annual AAN Convention in Madison, Wisconsin.
