Ruby City and MonteVideo will join Slab Cinema this Saturday for a screening and discussion of ASCO: Without Permission, a documentary by Travis Gutiérrez Senger about the ’70s Chicano art collective Active, Social, Conceptual, Observational.
Eschewing traditional forms of Chicanx art such as murals, ASCO presented performative, conceptually based work that ran the gamut from public reenactments of the Stations of the Cross to fake crime scenes.
Provocative and often polarizing, the group’s work challenged social norms associated with representation as well as the very foundations of what constituted Chicanx art at the time.
Following the screening, University of the Incarnate Word Art Professor Kathy Vargas, UTSA Bicultural Bilingual Studies Professor Emerita Ellen Riojas Clark and Ruby City Director Elyse A. Gonzales will discuss ASCO’s legacy and impact on Chicanx art.
Due to limited seating, online registration is required.
Free, 6:30-9 p.m., Slab Cinema Arthouse at Blue Star, 134 Blue Star, (210) 227-8400, rubycity.org.
