San Antonio police arrested a former Northside Independent School District employee last week over allegations he punched an autistic student in the face, the Express-News reports.

Adam Verastegui, 47, was taken into custody Feb. 3 on charges of injury to a child, elderly or disabled person with intent to cause bodily harm, Bexar County court records show. However, he was released from the Bexar county jail the following day after posting a $30,000 bond, records show.

The charges stemmed from a Jan. 23 incident at Taft High School. Verastegui, an instructional assistant at the school, is accused of striking a student with autism in the face, the daily reports.

An person purporting to be a witness told police of the alleged assault, according to the Express-News. Later, authorities found security footage that showed Verastegui punching the student with a closed fist, the daily also reports.

On Jan. 30, NISD fired Verastegui, who had been with the district since 2018, spokesperson Barry Perez told the daily.
