Over the weekend, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon crossed the finish line with its final Alamo City race.
Now, the city is moving ahead with plans for the inaugural San Antonio Marathon, which will bring new routes and a new ambition: becoming a proving ground for Boston Marathon hopefuls.
Josh Furlow, the San Antonio Marathon’s founder, told FOX San Antonio that the new routes will distinguish the city-organized event from the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and position it to become a Boston Qualifier. The race is scheduled to take place Dec. 3-5, 2025.
At a Nov. 18 press conference unveiling the new marathon, Furlow said he expects the event to draw at least 18,000 participants in its first year. Roughly 20,000 people ran in the Alamo City’s final Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, according to multiple media reports.
At last month’s press conference, San Antonio Marathon organizers said they’ll reveal course details early next year. The theme of the race’s inaugural installment will be “Every Step Tells a Story,” highlighting the the city’s culture, history and businesses.
To become a Boston Qualifier, a race must meet criteria for course standards and obtain certification from a recognized governing body such as USA Track & Field.
To submit their San Antonio Marathon time to qualify for the Boston Marathon, runners must meet specific time requirements for their age and gender groups. Those qualifying times range from 3 hours flat for men age 18-34 to 5 hours 20 minutes for women and non-binary people age 80 and over, according to the Boston Marathon’s website.
Runners can register for the San Antonio Marathon at a price of $99 for the full marathon, $79 for the half marathon and $45 for the 5K.
