In a late Tuesday night Instagram post, San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones ripped into actor Matthew McConaughey for a political video he posted over the weekend.
McConaughey surprised and angered some of his own fans by posting a clip on the eve of the state’s start of early voting which urged viewers to “vote independent.”
Jones referred to the video by the Dallas Buyers Club actor as a “waste of time” in her post, which featured a less-than-flattering screenshot of the Oscar-winning actor from the video in question.
“TLDW [Too Long Didn’t Watch] version: al-wrong, al-wrong al-wrong,” Jones quipped, playing on McConaughey’s famous “alright, alright, alright” line from his film debut, 1993’s Dazed and Confused.
McConaughey’s political proclivities have been the source of much speculation over the years. The actor has been seen posing for photos at University of Texas Longhorns games with Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. He’s also publicly toyed with running for statewide office himself, while declining to reveal his party affiliation.
Nonetheless, Jones wasn’t done giving him a political lesson.
“Recommending Texans vote independent in this election when we finally have an opportunity to vote out those who have enabled everything from the Uvalde massacre (ole Matt’s hometown), Texas having the highest rate of uninsured adults and kids in the country, and Texas being ground zero for the Nation’s most horrendous immigration enforcement actions, anti-reproductive healthcare laws, and voter suppression laws is the embodiment of reckless privilege,” Jones said.
And just in case there was any room for doubt, Jones underscored her counter-message:
“Vote for every Democrat,” the progressive mayor concluded. “Early voting ends Oct. 30.”

Texas politics is a mess. We make it a readable mess.
