Outgoing San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg will join Trinity University’s faculty this fall as Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice in the Department of Communication, according to officials with the private campus.
In his new role, Nirenberg — a 1999 Trinity graduate — will teach courses in communication during the 2025-26 academic year, school officials said. As part of his 12-month, renewable appointment, he’s also expected to provide a public lecture and serve as a university ambassador.

“We are pleased to welcome Mayor Nirenberg back to Trinity,” university President Vanessa B. Beasley said in an emailed statement. “As an alumnus who has dedicated his life to public service and leadership, Ron embodies the values of civic engagement and thoughtful communication that we instill in our students. His return to campus will enrich our academic mission and deepen our connection with the community.”

Nirenberg, who holds a communication degree from Trinity, was elected mayor 2017 and oversaw the city during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also spearheaded efforts to expand housing affordability and championed the city’s Ready to Work job-training program.

“I’m honored to return to Trinity this coming year,” Nirenberg said in a statement. “My time as a student here shaped who I am as a leader, and I’m eager to give back to the institution that helped launch my career. I look forward to engaging with students and faculty as we explore the ways communication, public policy and leadership intersect to shape our communities.”

The Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice is an endowed faculty position named for former Trinity University President Ronald K. Calgaard, who led the school through its growth into a nationally recognized liberal arts school.
