A 104-year-old Monte Vista bungalow that feels more old Hollywood than old San Antonio has hit the market with a $1.5 million price tag.

The eye-catching stucco mansion — which Alamo City historian Donald Everett described as being in the “Craftsman style with a Spanish eclectic mix” — was built in 1921 and remains a stunner a century later.

James T. Coleman of the Coleman & Jenkins construction firm built the four-bedroom, three-bath property and sold it two years later, according to Everett’s book San Antonio’s Monte Vista: Architecture and Society in a Gilded Age.

The 3,800-square-foot residence stayed in the family of the subsequent owner for the next 60 years, and in 1932 won the citywide award for “most beautiful yard,” Everett also notes.

Meticulous restoration work has updated elements of the home while keeping its Gilded Age craftsmanship. Those vintage touches include copious wood trim, custom built-ins and a fireplace featuring tiles made by Ernest Allan Batchelder, a leader in the American Arts and Crafts Movement.

This mix of old-time elegance and modern living is on full display in the house’s primary suite, which occupies its entire second floor. The area is equipped with a spa-inspired bath, a private balcony and custom walk-in closet. A sunroom overlooks a rectangular backyard swimming pool surrounded by lush landscaping.

Little surprise that listing agent Kristin Kellum has already fielded multiple offers on the property, which had only been on the market for a week as of press time.

“Hearts have been broken all over the city,” she said. “It’s got everything a Monte Vista buyer is looking for.”

This home is listed by Kristin Kellum with Phyllis Browning Co.
