Carlos De La Cruz, the brother of South Texas U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz, will run as a Republican to represent the newly redrawn 35th Congressional District, which includes part of San Antonio.
The businessman and Air Force veteran threw his hat into the ring Thursday with an announcement trumpeting his military experience and pledging he’ll become President Donald Trump’s “wingman in Congress and take down the radical leftists.”
Currently represented by Democratic U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, the 35th District was one of five recently redrawn to favor Republicans during state lawmakers’ controversial mid-decade redistricting. The reconfigured district no longer includes left-leaning downtown Austin and adds Republican-heavy Guadalupe, Karnes and Wilson counties.
Casar has since said he’ll run in 2026 to represent the deep-blue 37th District, which includes his hometown of Austin.
De La Cruz joins what’s likely to be crowded field for the 35th District’s GOP primary. State Rep. John Lujan III, R-San Antonio, has already formally announced a bid, while Josh Cortez —a former adviser to De La Cruz’s sister — is mulling a run, the Texas Tribune reports.
Beyond that, Bexar County Commissioner Grant Moody, San Antonio City Councilman Marc Whyte, Texas Funeral Service Commission chief Kristin Tips and Bexar County GOP Vice Chair Kyle Sinclair — all Republicans — are also said to be considering runs to represent the district.
Republican rep. Monica De La Cruz represents District 15, a long, narrow swath of South Texas that includes Edinburg, McAllen and Alice.
