Progressive groups are urging people concerned about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s reported purchase of an East Side warehouse for use as a detention center to show up at City Council’s Wednesday public comment session to voice their opposition.
In an Instagram post featuring the slogans “ICE out!” and “No new detention centers!” the San Antonio Chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation urged followers to register to speak at the 5 p.m. session.
The meeting will be held at City Council Chambers, 114 W. Commerce St., and speakers are expected to register online at saspeakup.com/HJ21302.
ICE reportedly closed its deal Tuesday to purchase the East Side industrial facility from Atlanta-based Oakmont Industrial Group. Although the sale price hasn’t been disclosed, the Bexar County Appraisal District assessed the building’s value at $38 million this year.
San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez have said that they are working with the city attorney to find a legal solution to either halt the sale or restrict zoning. However, neither elected official has shared details about those conversations as of press time.
