A man accused of strangling a kitten at a Southwest San Antonio apartment complex earlier this month is in police custody after turning himself in, according to media reports.

Police charged Ryan Berlanga, 31, with cruelty to a non-livestock animal after he was allegedly caught on Nov. 9 surveillance footage suffocating a grey-and-white tabby kitten at an apartment complex in the 7400 block of Yarrow Boulevard, KSAT reports

Police were called to the scene after a resident found the deceased feline in a building stairwell, according to the Express-News.

Police identified Berlanga as the suspect based on images of distinct tattoos on his left leg, neck and face, the daily reports. Investigators were able to run the tats through an SAPD database.

A witness was also able to identify Berlanga in a lineup Sunday, and an arrest affidavit was issued soon after, according to the paper. The suspect turned himself in Tuesday.

It’s not Berlanga’s first run-in with the law, according to the Express-News. Over the past four years, police have reportedly charged Berlanga with theft, harassment and assault against an elderly or disabled individual.
