After three decades with the Alamo City police force, San Antonio Police Officers’ Association President Danny Diaz will retire next month, he said in a late-Thursday Facebook post.
“Serving as president of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Diaz said in a statement. “I’m incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, standing united for our members, advocating for their rights, and working to strengthen our role in the community.”
In an interview with the Express-News, Diaz said his decision to retire from the San Antonio Police Department and step down as union president on May 31 stems from his pension eligibility and a desire to spend more time with family.
Diaz’s departure comes as the union engages in high-stakes contract negotiations with the city. It also comes as longtime police chief Bill McManus is set to retire in September.
SAPOA officials said an election will be held May 11 to elect Diaz’s replacement.
