The Bexar County District Attorney’s office dismissed all charges against a San Antonio mother accused of helping her son hide the dead body of a pregnant woman and her boyfriend two years ago, the Express-News reports.

Myrta Romanos, 49, was scheduled to face trial this week with jury selection starting Wednesday. She was charged with tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and altering, destroying, or concealing human remains.

However, the Bexar County District Attorney’s office confirmed to the Express-News that all charges against Romanos had been dropped. Officials declined to say why.

Romanos spent the past two years in police custody in connection with the December 2023 murders of pregnant Savanah Soto, 18, and her boyfriend, Mathew Guerra, 22. Police allege Romanos’ stepson, Christopher Preciado, 21, shot both Soto and Guerra in the head during a drug deal gone wrong.

Citing surveillance footage evidence, police alleged Romanos and her husband, Ramon Preciado, 55, helped their son dispose of the bodies in a Northwest San Antonio apartment complex a few miles from their home.

Romanos’ husband is still facing charges related to tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse, according to the Express-News.

At the same time, the couple’s son, whose trial begins in February, is charged with capital murder of multiple persons, capital murder of a child under 10 and capital murder with underlying robbery, the daily reports.
