“Stay alert, San Antonio,” the city’s official X account cautioned early Thursday afternoon. “There’s a low risk of flooding tonight, but remember: flash floods can happen fast, sometimes within minutes during heavy rain. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
The warning from city officials comes weeks after a flash flood at Bietel Creek on the Northwest side killed 13 people.
The city has launched an investigation into the cause of the tragedy, which some experts speculate might have been the result of ongoing construction near the intersection of I-35 and Loop 1604.
“[The investigation] will include an independent engineering analysis to understand the contributing factors and ensure facts guide us,” City Manager Erik Walsh wrote in a memo to City Council last month.
