Under the state’s new map, the newly created 35th Congressional District would include parts of the Alamo City along with outlying rural counties that skew Republican. Pieced together from five existing districts, the newly minted region would have gone to Trump by a 10-point margin had it existed last November, the Tribune reports.
These Alamo City Republicans are now weighing a run to represent District 35, according to the Trib’s investigation:
- Grant Moody, the sole Republican on Bexar County Commissioner’s Court
- City Councilman Marc Whyte, who represents conservative-leaning District 10
- State Rep. John Lujan III, who represents a swing district that includes South and East San Antonio
- Kristin Tips, a funeral director and head of the Texas Funeral Service Commission
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Chip Roy’s decision to run for Texas Attorney General would leave an opening in District 21, a conservative-leaning district that includes parts of both San Antonio and Austin.
Whyte also told the Tribune he’s considering a run there at the same time as he explores his options in 35. The councilman has received plenty of recent media buzz over his contentious debate with Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones about funding for a new Spurs arena, he also has the baggage of a DWI arrest and a reprimand from the city’s Ethics Review Board, both of which occurred last year.
What’s more, Bexar County GOP Vice Chair Kyle Sinclair — who’s mounted unsuccessful U.S. House runs during the past two election cycles — confirmed he’s thinking of a run in either the 35th or the 21st.
