The City of S.A. is looking for a virtual training system so trainees can get the feel of driving one of these big yellow beauties.
The city is taking driver training for its Solid Waste Management Department into the information age, according to recent contract documents. It's looking for bids to supply a high-tech simulator that can help trainees learn what it's like to hit the roads before they actually crank the engine of a real-life garbage truck.
The request for proposal doesn't say how much the city is willing to spend, but it's a safe bet it won't come cheap. After all, we're not talking about some kind of cheesy driving game you download at the App Store.
Nope. This sucker needs to have "realistic controls, gauges, indicators, dashboard displays, instrument panels, auxiliary warning/communications devices, driver’s seat, safety restraint, steering wheel assembly, joystick mechanism," and pretty much anything else you'd find in the cabin of a real-life garbage truck.
And did we mention, the city also wants it to simulate the loud in-cabin noises drivers hear as they're making the rounds? Perhaps potential trainees should consider themselves lucky Smell-o-Vision doesn't exist yet.
